The skills shortage is a worldwide phenomenon and SA is no exception. With only a small pool of local, experienced cybersecurity professionals Pearson Centre of Occupation Excellence has formed a strategic Partnership with EC-Council. This partnership is focused on offering comprehensive Ethical Hacking and Information Systems Security Auditing programmes concentrating on the latest cyber security threats, advanced attack vectors and practical demonstration of the latest Hacking Techniques, Methodologies, Tools, Tricks and Security Measures.

Joey Jansen van Vuuren from the CSIR states: “The problem is we do not have cybersecurity-focused education programmes in SA.” She continues to state “In the cybersecurity centre of innovation in South Africa, we want government, business and higher education to collaborate to develop a good playing field to build capacity and capability in the country.”

The above statement was emphasised at the ITWeb Security Summit 2017 “…. – the user – remained the weakest link in information security, and technology alone could not combat this”. This statement was corroborated by the Cyber security risk services at Deliotte’s Derek Schraader.

Pearson has taken on this challenge, and together with the EC-Council are ready to provide more than 20 programmes in cyber security from Fundamental level right up to expert level. The EC-Council programmes are recognised certification by the United States Department of Defence (DoD), Computer Network Defence Service Providers (CND-SP) under the auspices of DoD Directives 8570 Information Assurance Workforce Improvement Program.

The Pearson Centre of Occupation Excellence will focus on the skills and competencies required to address the Scarce and Critical skills in the relevant Industries. In line with the Skills Development Act of 1998. Pearson will implement skills development programmes for the workforce to improve the quality of life of workers, their prospects for work and labour mobility.  Pearson therefore supports the improvement of productivity in the workplace and the competitiveness of employers through the Centre of Occupational Excellence working closely with the relevant SETA.
