Wales, U.K., Dec 18, 2019 — There are closed-group Hackathons held around the world, all through the year. Then some stand out for pushing the envelope. This year’s Hackathon by Cardiff Metropolitan School of Technologies, in partnership with EC-Council, the world’s leading cybersecurity credentialing body, makes the cut by having its prospective students experience cybersecurity firsthand as an insight to the degree they will be looking to study. The event, which is in its 13th edition, included an ethical hacking competition that saw 12 schools compete for prizes while completing a guided ‘Sniffing’ lab assessment.
Over the past couple of years, the U.K. faced over 1800 cyberattacks since the establishment of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in 2016. While the NCSC is not able to confirm the number of incidents that were prevented or disrupted by them, the U.K. recognizes that the intervention by cybersecurity experts has saved large swathes of data from being breached, thereby preventing tremendous financial loss. It confirmed that the launch of Operation Haulster managed to flag fraudulent intention against over 1 million stolen credit card details, even before the crime occurred.
While NCSC is working towards creating secure networks that connect people, businesses, and governments, the cybersecurity skill-gap in the U.K. has reached a crisis point, as pointed out by RedSeal in their latest report. Frompolling data on cybercrime, RedSeal observed that shockingly 87% U.K. CIOs and senior IT professionals are struggling to find cybersecurity professionals with the needed expertise. Whereas, 95% specified that the security skill gap will further widen due to lack of cybersecurity education in the U.K. To help combat this EC-Council is making considerable contributions to fuel the cybersecurity ecosystem in the U.K. with its industry-recognized cybersecurity credentials and Academia programme.
