EC-Council’s CEH Compete April 2026 Challenge Tests Domain Security in The Distress Signal Scenario

EC-Council, inventor of the world-renowned Certified Ethical Hacker (CEHAI) certification, completed the April 2026 CEH Compete challenge under the theme AD Compromise: The Distress Signal. This month’s competition simulated a mission where participants were required to regain control of a compromised domain in order to restore communication with a stranded exploration drone.

The scenario involved Ares Interplanetary, an organization that had lost contact with ROVER-01, a geological drone operating on the Martian surface. Following a major domain misconfiguration, administrative access had been locked, leaving only limited connectivity to internal systems. Participants were provided with wordlists and access to a compromised terminal and tasked with infiltrating the domain, recovering a legacy protocol key from MARS-DC01, and reestablishing communication before the drone powered down permanently.

The April challenge tested practical knowledge of Active Directory exploitation, credential attacks, and privilege escalation techniques. Participants were required to examine authentication processes, leverage weak configurations, and develop attack paths to regain control of the domain environment. The simulation reflected how misconfigured or poorly secured domains can create critical vulnerabilities for enterprises and government systems.

The competition also emphasized the importance of resilience and precision in high-stakes situations. With administrative credentials unavailable, competitors had to rely on partial data, incomplete access, and persistence to achieve the mission objective. The scenario highlighted how defenders must often respond to incidents with incomplete information while still achieving reliable results.

Successful participants demonstrated the ability to recover the protocol key, restore access, and document the methods used. The exercise also required reporting on recommendations to strengthen domain configurations, including improved password policies, multi-factor authentication, and more rigorous monitoring of domain controllers.

The April challenge provided a unique opportunity for participants to address domain-related threats in a context that combined technical problem solving with mission continuity. The simulation reinforced how security professionals must be prepared to handle incidents that threaten both operational objectives and broader organizational goals.
